The developers behind the controversial crypto mixer Tornado Cash have been embroiled in a prolonged legal struggle, accused of enabling illegal financial activities. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the case, the situation remains unresolved, with one developer currently imprisoned and another engaged in an ongoing legal fight.

However, despite the gravity of the charges, the crypto industry has shown strong support for Tornado Cash’s creators.

Vitalik Buterin Extends Support to Tornado Cash Developer

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has once again come to the aid of Tornado Cash co-developer Roman Storm by contributing to his legal defense fund. On October 4, 2024, the “Free Pertsev & Storm” crowdfunding page revealed that Buterin had donated 100 ETH, approximately $240,000 at current market value.

This donation marks Buterin’s third contribution to Storm’s legal defense, having previously donated 30 ETH in March. Buterin, a well-known advocate for privacy, has consistently voiced his opposition to the legal actions against Tornado Cash’s developers, viewing them as an attack on privacy within the crypto industry.

Roman Storm expressed his profound gratitude for Buterin’s continued support, stating: "I can't describe how much it means to me. Thank you for your long-lasting support."

So far, Storm’s defense fund has collected 327 ETH, worth around $785,000, a figure likely bolstered by recent developments involving his partner.

Tornado Cash Co-Founder Sentenced

In August 2024, a Dutch court sentenced Tornado Cash co-founder Alexey Pertsev to 64 months in prison after finding him guilty of facilitating money laundering through the crypto mixing platform. The court ruled that Pertsev was liable for the misuse of the protocol by criminals, as he failed to implement safeguards to prevent illegal activity.

Despite his sentencing, Pertsev has begun the process of appealing the decision. His legal team has issued a call for donations, citing the need for approximately $750,000 to $1 million to fund the appeal process.

Vitalik Buterin has also expressed dismay over Pertsev’s five-year prison sentence, saying: "It’s definitely really, really sad, and I hope that with Roman’s trial in the U.S., we get some positive clarity there."

Roman Storm is still awaiting trial in the U.S. and has recently filed a motion to postpone the trial until early 2025. Meanwhile, other crypto mixers have faced similar legal scrutiny. In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice arrested the founders of Samurai Wallet, another crypto mixing service, on charges related to money laundering and violations of U.S. law.

Industry Response and Importance

Vitalik Buterin’s ongoing support for Tornado Cash highlights the broader industry's backing of developers facing legal challenges over privacy-focused technologies. His latest financial contribution provides a substantial boost to the ongoing legal efforts for Storm and Pertsev, reinforcing the importance of privacy within the crypto space.
