Sony Ventures into the Blockchain Space with Its New Project "Soneium." This is a Layer-2 network built on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing Optimism's OP Stack technology to enhance performance and scalability.
Sony Launches Its Own Blockchain: Introducing 'Soneium'
Sony, known for its innovations like Betamax and the Walkman in the 1970s, is now entering the blockchain arena.
In partnership with Startale Labs from Singapore, Sony Block Solutions Labs has unveiled "Soneium," a new Layer-2 network operating on the Ethereum blockchain. This initiative marks a significant step for a major corporation in developing blockchain technology for consumer applications.
Soneium is expected to launch its testnet soon. It will leverage optimistic rollup technology to facilitate more cost-effective transactions on Ethereum. The network will be built using Optimism's OP Stack, which allows developers to create and customize their own blockchain networks while enabling integration with other projects within the "Superchain."
Other well-known networks using the OP Stack include Coinbase’s "Base" and Worldcoin’s "World Chain."
Technology Partnerships and Compliance Features Enhance Soneium Testnet Launch
Web3 companies like Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink are joining as technology partners for Soneium’s testnet launch. These partnerships aim to enhance Soneium's blockchain functionality and performance.
The Soneium testnet will feature integrated tools to help developers comply with global regulations, thereby facilitating the development of applications that meet legal standards.
Sota Watanabe, Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, emphasized that Soneium intends to leverage Sony Group’s extensive distribution network and existing user base to create a product with broad appeal. "With Soneium, we aim to deliver something that people find valuable, going beyond the Web3 niche," he said.
The project will also explore how Soneium can be integrated into existing Web3 services and potentially develop new solutions that align with Sony Group's various business sectors.
