M2 Exchange to Facilitate Direct Crypto Transactions for UAE Residents
Crypto exchange M2 has announced a new feature allowing residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ether directly using their bank accounts. According to an announcement shared with Cointelegraph, this integration enables UAE residents to convert their dirhams into Bitcoin and Ethereum seamlessly. Users can trade BTC and ETH for dirhams and vice versa on M2’s spot markets, as well as deposit and withdraw dirhams.
Enhancing Accessibility and Market Responsiveness
The M2 team believes this new feature will help users “swiftly adapt to market changes,” facilitating easier conversion of local currency into crypto. The integration is seen as a significant step towards broader access to virtual assets in the UAE, which is experiencing a rapidly evolving digital asset landscape.
Regulatory Framework and Consumer Protection in the UAE
Kimmel, an executive at M2, noted that this development could benefit everyday investors, particularly those new to trading. He emphasized that BTC and ETH are popular choices for entry-level investors due to their high market familiarity and trading volumes.
The UAE government, known for its stringent consumer protection regulations, oversees this move. In 2022, Dubai’s Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA) introduced measures to ensure clarity in marketing and promotions to protect consumers. In 2023, a federal law was established to safeguard consumers and prevent fraudulent activities similar to those seen with FTX. This law includes sanctions of up to 10 million AED ($2.7 million) for violators.
Kimmel mentioned that the ADGM’s licensing process is demanding, reflecting the UAE's commitment to security and transparency in financial services.
Strategic Importance of the UAE in Crypto Regulation
Business consulting firm executive Tao Xiao has highlighted that VARA’s licensing process can take up to a year to complete, underscoring the region’s dedication to market integrity and investor protection. Despite the challenges, the UAE’s regulatory framework offers benefits such as favorable tax policies, access to global markets, and a supportive environment for innovation.
