Mark Karpelès, the former CEO of the now-defunct Mt. Gox exchange, has announced his plans to launch a new cryptocurrency exchange called EllipX in Europe, based in Poland. The new platform is expected to be operational later this month and promises strict regulatory adherence, transparency, and robust security measures.

Karpelès' announcement was made during the Korea Blockchain Week 2024 (KBW2024), where he acknowledged his turbulent past and emphasized his desire to "make right what went wrong" during his time at Mt. Gox. His return to the crypto world comes after years of legal battles and public scrutiny following the collapse of Mt. Gox in 2014, one of the largest disasters in cryptocurrency history.

Who is Mark Karpelès?

Mark Karpelès, a French-born entrepreneur, became the CEO of Mt. Gox in 2011. Under his leadership, Mt. Gox handled around 70% of global Bitcoin transactions, becoming the largest Bitcoin exchange at the time. However, in early 2014, Mt. Gox abruptly shut down after it was revealed that around 850,000 Bitcoin—worth approximately $450 million at the time—were stolen due to security breaches.

The collapse sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, leading to a widespread loss of confidence in digital assets. Karpelès was arrested in Japan in 2015, facing charges of embezzlement and data manipulation. He was ultimately acquitted of embezzlement but found guilty of falsifying financial records. His reputation, however, suffered significantly, and he became one of the most controversial figures in the crypto space.

In the years since Mt. Gox's collapse, ongoing efforts have been made to compensate the exchange’s creditors. Karpelès has said that over 50% of Mt. Gox customers have been repaid, and efforts continue to resolve the remaining claims.

EllipX: A New Beginning

EllipX marks Karpelès' attempt at redemption in the cryptocurrency world. The exchange aims to comply with stringent European regulations, with Karpelès stating that he has learned from the past mistakes that led to Mt. Gox's downfall. EllipX is focused on restoring trust in cryptocurrency exchanges by prioritizing security and transparency.

While Karpelès' return to the industry may be met with skepticism, he is determined to demonstrate that he has evolved and is committed to creating a secure, reliable platform for European traders. This new venture could signify a fresh start for both Karpelès and the European cryptocurrency market.
